Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a cancer-like growth in the breast
ducts. It is a noninvasive cancer and will not metastasize (spread
outside the breast) unless it first undergoes a transformation to
become invasive. It is considered a very early stage of breast cancer
and is classified as Stage 0.
In some cases, DCIS would never progress to become invasive. All
women are treated as if it could progress, though, because doctors
have no way of knowing which would not.
Treatment options vary according to characteristics of the DCIS.
They include lumpectomy with or without radiation, mastectomy, and
tamoxifen.
